Leading & Motivating in the Real World

Introduction

In one of his many books, the futurist John Naisbitt comments ‘…we are managing and leading at a time when Human Resources have replaced financial resources as THE most strategic resource’. Few question this opinion. Clearly, how to lead and motivate workers to peak performance is one of the most important questions in management today. This is especially true in hospitality, given the transforming nature of the work environment and the challenges we face in attracting and retaining the best workers.

Leading & Motivating in the Real World

The module starts by examining the people entering the workforce today. Characterized as ‘The Millennials’, they are a generation with a specialized set of expectations, which are explored as they relate to motivational and employee retention issues. Older, more experienced, workers are also considered. How can they be brought ‘up to speed’? Some of the classic models that help us understand how to lead and motivate are explored, and the patterns of behavior needed to move employees toward maximizing profitability are identified.
Since teamwork is such an important component of today’s work environment, this is also examined in detail.
Group exercises, along with video examples, will be used to support learning.
The Lifestyles Inventory, a psychometric instrument that examines each participant’s leadership thinking, will also be administered to help participants improve their management style.

Topics include

• Aesthetics vs. Quality
• Paradigm shifting
• Helping People Grow
• The transformed workforce
• Improving personal effectiveness
• Teamwork
